What is Shot Blasting and Why is it Important in Steel Fabrication?

Shot Blasting and Steel Fabrication

When it comes to steel fabrication, surface preparation is just as important as cutting, drilling or welding. One of the most effective methods used across the industry is shot blasting. At MAK Structures, we carry out all our steel processing in house at our Wakefield facility, including professional shot blasting to ensure the highest standards of quality and durability.

What is Shot Blasting?

Shot blasting is a process that cleans and prepares the surface of steel by propelling abrasive materials, often steel shots or grit, at high velocity. This removes rust, mill scale, paint and other impurities from the steel surface.

The result is a clean textured surface that is ready for further processing such as cutting, drilling, welding or painting.

Why is Shot Blasting Important?

1. Improves Surface Quality

By removing rust, scale and contaminants, shot blasting provides a clean finish. This ensures the steel not only looks better but also performs better when used in construction or fabrication.

2. Enhances Coating Adhesion

Paint, primer and protective coatings adhere much more effectively to a blasted surface. This increases the lifespan of the steel and ensures that protective layers do not peel or fail prematurely.

3. Increases Durability

Shot blasting can expose surface defects that might otherwise be hidden. Identifying and addressing these early makes for stronger, longer lasting steel components.

4. Meets Industry Standards

In the UK, many projects require steel to meet strict compliance and safety standards. Shot blasting ensures that steel surfaces are prepared to the required specification, making it a vital part of UKCA Marked fabrication up to Execution Class 3.

Shot Blasting at MAK Structures

At MAK Structures, we specialise in commercial steel fabrication and subcontract steel processing. Our in house shot blasting service ensures every beam, column and plate is fully prepared before it leaves our 20,000 sq ft Wakefield facility.

By combining shot blasting with our cutting, drilling, welding and painting capabilities, we deliver a complete steel fabrication service under one roof, helping our clients save time, reduce costs and meet deadlines with confidence.

Final Thoughts

Shot blasting may not always be the most visible part of the fabrication process, but it plays a crucial role in ensuring steel is durable, safe and compliant. Whether it is a small extension project or a large scale commercial development, properly blasted steel provides the foundation for quality construction.
